Social Service: Meaning of an Open Setting

What Boys Is St. Peter's Is Good For?

St. Peters Home for Boys is an open residential setting. It is a Pre Supervised Independent Living setting. The boys at St. Peters are able to earn a limited full access to the community. They may earn the privilege of leave property without being accompanied by an adult. This level of freedom allows them to attend public schools, have friends in the community who they can visit at St. Peters Home and have an opportunity to engage in weekend dating activities. The setting is very similar to the freedom a boy might have in a foster home setting, but these freedoms are earned by progressing through the residential program and the educational program.

A boy upon entering St. Peters Home for Boys does not have any of the freedoms associated with an open setting. A boy must follow the structured residential and educational program paths to demonstrate his ability to handle free choices and must continuous progress toward meeting educational goals and social responsibility goals to merit recommendation to return back to the community in either a relatives home placement, a foster home placement or Supervised Independent Living placement.
